Review - Nailshitter, Aruspex, Amputation at The Dungeon
Actually, I was only able to catch Aruspex and Amputation at The Dungeon tonight. Tons or prior arrangements got me busy, but I'm glad I was able to make it out. Aruspex was typically awesome, and I was impressed by how good Amputation was.
Amputation was the first band I saw. All of the members are big guys. They're the kind of guys you'd worry about stealing your lunch money, then tearing off your nipples with their bare hands. That's not to say that Amputation is a bunch of dumb meat-heads: the technical prowess of Amputation is impressive, even by Death Metal standards. These guys know what they're doing.
Amputation had to say goodbye to one of their guitarists tonight. He's leaving for Chicago, and this was his last show. That's a shame, cause he's really good. I talked with some of the rest of band for a while, and they mentioned that a new album was probably going to have to wait until summer.
Aruspex came on afterwards. I haven't seen them live in about a year now. In that time, they've gotten quite a bit better. While Aruspex could be called Black Metal; they're very much still quite a Death Metal band. There are many parallels between Aruspex and Marduk. Aruspex rocks hard, and they know it.
Aruspex played all of the songs off their new album, Blessed For Extinction. While all the songs were performed very well, I'm personally drawn to "The Throne of Hell". Maybe its the conviction that Ed (Makowske) has when singing that song. Perhaps, it's just the title. Regardless, that song stands out as an awesome song to witness live.
I didn't get to see Nailshitter play. It's a shame, cause those guys are awesome. They've recently had to replace their longtime drummer, Danny Morris. Danny is a great drummer and I'd have loved to see who was filling his shoes. I trust the set was routinely killer, as all Nailshitter shows are.
Just like every other time I've been to the Dungeon, I had a good time. The people are welcoming, and the bands slay. Just like most folks into Death Metal, the exterior looks rough, but the truth is enlightening. Thanks to everyone who put the show together. This was another example of why Florida has the best Death Metal scene in the world.
